Total hip replacement in young boy in KIMS



Bhubaneswar : Total Hip replacement surgery is usually done in older patients with damaged hip joint. This is a very successful procedure of 20th century. Kamaljit purohit, a 24 year old boy from Bargarh district, admitted in KIMS orthopaedic OPD with stiff spine and damaged hip joint as he was suffering from a disease called ankylsing spondylitis. This disease is an intlamatory disease that affects spine and hip joint between 20-40 years and causes stiffness and pain in spine and hip joint. For this stiff and damaged hip joint patient was unable to sit alone, stand alone and unable to walk. He was bed ridden for last 1 year. He came to hospital in a wheel chair. He was examined properly and it was decided joint replacement of hip was only solution to get relief from his problem.
On 18th august 2011 total hip replacement was done successfully in KIMS by team of doctors led by joint replacement surgeon Dr. B.K. Behera and Anesthetist Dr. Jagdish Mishra. In this surgery damage head of femur is replaced by metal prosthesis and damaged acetabulum was replaced by metal poly socket. After surgery patient was able to sit alone and started walking after 2nd day of surgery. Patient  & his family members are very happy now as patient is able to walk independently and thanked the staff of KIMS & Hospital.
