CHOREOGRAPHING THE BENEVOLENCE OF RAVANA AND AESTHETICS OF KATHAK

















Bhubaneswar : The Department of Tourism, Goverenment of Odisha had another ocassion to celebrate a unique festival encompassing some brilliant pieces of choreography from the stems of Indian Classical Dances. Organised by Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademy, this 5-day choreography festival of dance from 1st to 5th March 2012 for the first of its kind entitled “Samrachana” is aimed at presenting fresh, innovative and creative choreographies on both traditional and contemporary subjects adhering to the Shastric elements, embedded in classical dances of India, distinictive from the standard repertoire or practice.

The evening’s programme started with a dance ballet Ravana from the great epic Ramayana where all positive traits of Ravana have been very elegantly potrayed by the  eminent dancer and choreographer Guru Ratikanta Mohapatra. He excelled in presenting the Ravana charecter more so with his flawless mimetic finesse and captivating portrayal blending different Bhabas and Rasas. It was indeed an impeccable performance with proper balance between classicisim and contemporary aesthetics. Strong visual effect through creative innovation and intelligent thematic approach to choreography marked the versatality of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra who truely carried forward the legacy of the great Guru and his father Padmabibhusana Kelu Charan Mohapatra. The choreography was more alive and effulgent by the brillant performance of the co-dancers led by eminent danseuse Sujata Mohapatra, Rajashree Praharaj and others. The music rendered by noted musician Shri Debashis Sarkar was highly emotive and punctuated with traditional Ragas and Talas based on the script and sanskrit rendering by Dr. Manmohan Acharya.

The second item was a Kathak recital by the Bangalore based eminent dancing couple Nirupama Rajendra and their students of Abhinava Dance Company, Bangalore which is constantly exploring innovations and creativity in bringing out the true essence of Indian Dance. Their performance is laced with different aspects and the essence of Indian Culture, Art, Philosophy Knowledge Systems entitled OJAS featuring Varsha’s an overjoyous celebration in excitement with the advent of rain, Ta-Dhan, wonderful experience reflected in the pure dance Nritta of Kathak emanating breath-taking chakkars and vibrant footwork and elegant nuances, Rasalila, showcasing love, humility, separation and reunion Radha & Krishna followed by the episode Abhimanyu from Mahabharat depicting the usage of sound syllables and charis from Natyashastra interspersed with Kathak technique and complexity of the patterns in the war field. Both the programmes were highly appreciated by the audiences who were enthralled by the brilliant performance of the artistes.

The festival was inagurated with lighting the lamp by the dignitaries Dr. Sarat Pujari, President OSNA, Dr. Sunil Kothari, emient Dance Critic, Padmashree Dr. Minati Mishra, noted Odissi Dance exponent, Mr. Alastair Macoulay, Chief Dance Critic of New York Times, Guru Aruna Mohanty, Vice President, OSNA, Shri H. S. Upadhyay, Director, Tourism, Dr. Sangeeta Goswain and Secretary, OSNA. The festival was organised to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the formation of Swatantra Odisha Pradesh.
