THE SPANDA OF BHARATNATYAM AND ABARTAN BIBARTAN OF ODISSI REGALED THE AUDIENCE















Bhubaneswar : The candle of Samrachana, the Choreography Festival of Dance that lit for 5 days burnt till 5th March 2012 spreading the light of understanding the choreography amongst the Gurus, Dancers, Scholars, Critics and the art connoisseurs from across the country. The festival as a part of Platinum Jublee celebration of the formation of Odisha State was presented by Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha and organised by Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademy. The festival showcased the choreographic productions on different classical and contemporary dance presentations of India which not only broadened the horizon of traditional and contemporary choreography but gave a boost to the creativity of the choreographers.

The concluding day’s first programme was a dance recital Spanda presented by the artistes of Kalakshetra, Chennai, Spanda means vibration based on Bharatnatyam depicting philosophical concept of Pruthivi (earth) as the embodiment and manifestation of eternal energy equated with Navam or the Womb as origin of energy in the human body. It was a beautiful blend rather a dialogue between dance, music and stagecraft basing on Panchajatis i.e. chatushram, tishram, mishram, khandam and sankeernam. This was followed by Akash exploring the space as narrated in Vedic hymns which exuded varied gesticulations and perfect synchronization. The concluding item was Charishnu, an expression of the joy of journeying of a human being or an animal in their respective ways showing dynamics in different movements. The programme was choreographed by Padamashree Leela Samson, music by O.S. Arun and Madhup Mudgal and the songs sung by the choir of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. The artistes of Kala Kshetra enthralled the audience by their superb presentation and captivating performance.

The second programme was Odissi by Guru Sharmila Biswas from Odissi Vision and Movement Centre, Kolkata. Their first performance was Gati Vilash depicting gaits of different animals punctuated with the typical syllables and Sabda-Swara-Pata. The next item was Katha Surpanakha, an Abhinaya based on the episode from the epic Ramayana. The music had the flavour of typical Odissi Chhanda enjoyed by the Rasikas. Her concluding item was Abartan-Bibartan depicting the Odissi Talas with mathematical calculations through Arasas  expanding the nuances of Odissi music. All the three items were choreographed by Guru Sarmila Biswas with music composed by Praffula Kar, Suramani Ramesh Chandra Das and Bijay Kumar Barik. Guru Ramahari Das and Dhaneswar Swain had provided music and rhythm to the concluding item. The audiences present were deeply engrossed by their splendid presentation.

A Seminar was organised on 2nd and 5th March 2012 from 10.30 AM to 1.30 PM in the Mini Auditorium of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya which highlighted the different aspects related to choreography. It was focused on the traditional and contemporary elements and their harmonious fusion in the changing time and ofcourse the aesthetics in group presentations other-wise called Pindibandha in Natya Shastra. It was more of an interaction than a Seminar as such which gave a new creative impulse to the artistic choreography.

The festival was inaugurated with lighting the lamp by the dignitaries Shri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, His Excellency the Governor of Odisha, Shri Debi Prasad Mishra, Hon’ble Minister, Forest & Enviornment, Padamashree Guru Leela Samson, President, Central Sangeet Natak Academy, Dr. Sarat Pujari, President, OSNA, Shri Ashok Kumar Tripathy, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Culture Department, Shri Susil Kumar Das, Director, Culture, Shri Ramahari Das, Chief Executive, Odissi Research Centre, Guru Aruna Mohanty, Vice President, OSNA and Dr. Sangeeta Goswain. The programme was conducted by Dr. Mrutyunjaya Rath and Dr. Itishree Dwivedi.
