EXPLORING THE ARTISTIC ESSENCE OF ODISSI AND MANIPURI IN SAMRACHANA
















Bhubaneswar : The 4th day choreography festival witnessed some colourful and enchanting items of Odissi and Manipuri. The Odissi programme started with  Ranga Stuti, an invocatory piece on space indicating the stage for bestowing the artistes with poetic imagery and artistic creativity  interlaced with verses from Nandikeshwar’s Abhinaya Darpana, the 12th century C. compendium. This was followed by Vistaar exporing “Nritta” (pure dance) aspect of Odissi through the musical structure of Alap, Jod, Jhala and the bandish in Pallavi with rhythmic patterns and spatial arrangments. Her next item was Taopoi a popular Odia folklore written by Gopinath Das in the 16th century AD. Taopoi, the young girl brought up in the lap of luxury, love and care had to suffer miseries due to turn in fortune. The concluding item was Vadya Vaividhya, an exploration of sound, rhythm and space in an abstract dance piece inspired by the variety of percussion instruments of Odisha like Khajani, Jodi Nakra, Jhanja and Khol. The choreography of all her items had aesthetic charms seamlessly exuded a fine balance with subtle expression interwoven with elegant rhythmic footwork, lyrical movement and typical Odissi flavour. The items were choreographed by Padmashree Madhavi Mudgal and Music given by Madhup Mudgal and Maheswar Rao.

The second programme was Manipuri dance recital by renowned danseuse and the daughter of Manipuri dance mastreo duo Guru Bipin Singh and Smt Kalavati Devi. Her prodution Leichan, weaving a tapestry of the Vaishnavite festival dances of Manipur with related rituals. Her first item was Kathokchaba, an offering to God based on the philosophy of Chitanya followed by Basanta, depicting the enchanting splendor of spring portrayed through the verses of Jayadev Gitagobinda alongwith the other padavalis. The next item presented by Bimbavati and the artistes of the Manipuri Nartanalya, Kolkata was Goshtha Kreeda, depicting the traditional yet stylized childern’s theatre performed in temple courtyards and open fields by the shepherd boys in the month of Kartik. For conluding item was another offering Jaya Jaya Deva Hare with the traditional clap dance called Khubak Ishei. It portrays the Krishna departure from Vrindaban to Mathura. It was highly structured dance performed to vocal music with minimal mime in the presentation. The music was composed by Guru Bipin Singh and Kalavati Devi, Song sung by Kalavati Devi, Premila Devi, Bimbavati Devi to the accompaniment of Pung by Guru Birmangal Singh and Brojen Singha, Netajit Singh and Narendrajit Sharma. Dances were choreoghraphed by Bimbavati Devi.

The festival was inaugurated with lighting the lamp by the dignitaries Shri Aurobinda Behera, IAS, Member, Board of Revenue, Dr. Sarat Pujari, President, OSNA, Shri Ashok Kumar Tripathy, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Culture Department, Shri Susil Kumar Das, Director, Culture, Guru Aruna Mohanty, Vice President, OSNA and Dr. Sangeeta Goswain. The programme was conducted by Dr. Mrutyunjaya Rath and Dr. Itishree Dwivedi.
