EVOLUTION IN ODISSI AND EXPERIEMENTATION IN CONTEMPORARY


















Bhubaneswar : Almost all Indian Classical dances have originated from the esoteric temple rituals and evolved to an artistic presentation performed on stage traversing through time. The transition of these dance forms from the temple precincts to the modern stage, from regional to national and international has enlarged the boundaries of choreography.

Reconstruction of Odissi dance from the fragments of Mahari and Gotipua tradition with Sabda-Swara-Pata taken from folk forms like Sakhinata, Rasa, Leela and other allied art forms along with inspiration drawn from the sculptural relief and pictorial images has enriched its aesthetics. Resurrected in 1950s Odissi has developed a rich and structured repertoire namely Mangalacharan, Pallavi, Sthayee and Mokshya, to give it a basic framework. Noted danseuse and Guru Aruna Mohanty with students of Orissa Dance Academy presented Odissi Gatha showcasing the evolution and transition of Odissi Dance from temple to the stage experimenting with theme and music. This added a unique flavour eliciting wide appreciation from the audience.

The second programme of the evening the game of dice was a multimedia dance production. The production has drawn its shape and vision from the rigorous, dramatic and vibrant elements of Kathakali, the energy, control and martial arts spirit of Mayurbhanj Chhau and the creativity and experimentation of Contemporary dance. In Mahabharata the game of dice cleverly manipulated by the shrewd Uncle Shakuni, that the Pandava brothers unwittingly gamble away and lose their kingdom, crown and beautiful wife Draupadi which led to the catastrophe of the battle of Kurukshetra.

The theme presented by Shri Santosh Nair and his Group, Sadhya, New Delhi had a breadth of vision, riveting plot and a compelling dramatic structure as well as complex but real characters, wisdom with messages relevant even today. Though the subject was ancient, its treatment was contemporary. Aspects like music and costumes have been experimented upon. The production is interspered with modern interpretation of both the characters and their conflicts. The novel taste of the production deeply engrossed the audience throughout the place.

The festival was inaugurated with lighting the lamp by the dignitaries eminent danseuse Padmashree Madhavi Mudgal, Noted litterateur Shri Rajendra Panda, Shri Ashok Kumar Tripathy, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Culture Department, Shri H. S. Upadhyay, IFS, Director, Tourism, Dr. Sangeeta Goswain and Shri Kailash Chandra Sahoo, Secretary, OSNA. The programme was conducted by Dr. Mrutyunjaya Rath and Dr. Itishree Dwivedi.
